Seeing Through the Slogans

Unpacking the hollow virtue of American Liberal yard signs

5 min read

If you walk through liberal neighborhoods in the U.S., you’ll often see those yard signs covered in slogans. Lately, I’ve felt compelled to look beneath them — to unpack the shadow side of the nice-sounding language that defines much of modern American liberalism. On social media, I began this exploration with “Protect Trans Kids.” Today, I go further.

On the left, you see an actual sign often displayed proudly outside a well-to-do liberal household. On the right, I have unpacked it.

A slogan often hides more than it reveals.

I’ve wondered what makes someone put up a sign like that. Not all liberals do. The difference, I sense, lies in a mix of urgency and inconsistency – a haste to adopt and display values without the patience to apply them coherently. It’s that “have your cake and eat it too” impulse.

For the longest time, I didn’t even understand that phrase. I think that’s because I’ve always had an inner drive toward coherence and consistency. I haven’t always lived up to it – I’m a sinner too, like we all are – but that drive has shaped how I see integrity. Integrity isn’t perfection. It isn’t about displaying a finished product of your value system for others to admire. It’s about finessing it – continually refining how your values and actions align, even when that process is messy or humbling.

That’s what moved me to create an alternative version of that sign: to reveal the shadow side behind each slogan – the part they refuse to account for.

Black Lives Matter → White Guilt, Black Victimhood

When someone says “Black Lives Matter,” it often carries an unspoken rejection of the sovereign power of Black people. It depends on maintaining an unholy marriage between white guilt and Black (and other people of color’s) victimhood. For white guilt to persist, Black victimhood must remain. That dependency keeps Black and brown people from stepping into full sovereignty. And when they do, you can see how fiercely white liberals attack them, accusing them of betraying their own. It’s profoundly disrespectful – yet the attacking white liberal is, in that moment, possessed by moral outrage, a demon that afflicts many today. In such moments, that disrespect is beyond their awareness.

Women’s Rights Are Human Rights → Murdering Babies Is Empowerment

Anyone even slightly clued into American sociopolitics knows what this slogan is really about: abortion. What an odd time to be alive when the entirety of “women’s rights” has come to revolve around the taking of life. That’s how you know the movement has

reached its end. Every movement that fulfills its life-giving purpose must eventually die a natural death. If it refuses to die at the end of its purpose, it begins to embrace Death instead. And that’s exactly what has happened here. The women’s rights movement, rather than completing its work and releasing itself, has channeled the energies of Death – a deal with Satan, if there ever was one – and redirected them outward, confusing the power to kill others with empowerment itself.

No Human Is Illegal → Anarchy Trumps Order

Beneath this slogan is a rebellion against order itself – an uplifting of anarchy. It reflects a revolutionary impulse that rarely considers what kind of order will follow. History is full of revolutions that replaced one oppressive order with another, often one even more cruel and restrictive than what came before. The French and American revolutions are the rare exceptions – moments when a new and more life-affirming order emerged. Order is inevitable, because order brings peace and predictability, which every human soul craves. The slogan rejects the idea of a nation-state without offering an alternative – a vision of destruction without creation.

Science Is Real → Doubt Is Heresy

“Science is Real” reflects what I’d call a modern disease of the intellect: Scientism. It confuses the sacred process of science with blind faith in institutions. True science is never a collection of settled facts – it’s a living process of holding hypotheses many of which will eventually be falsified. At any given moment, the scientific establishment is standing on ideas that will, in time, be proven wrong. That’s how progress happens. And nowhere is this clearer than in our attempts to understand the human body and consciousness, where today’s confident claims are often tomorrow’s discarded theories. To say “Science is Real” is to reveal a lack of understanding of this very process.

Love Is Love → Love Is Lust

Satanic energies, in my observation, tend to lead with an attack on language and meaning. The phrase “love is love” means nothing. Its emptiness is not accidental – it reflects a broader postmodern trend of hollowing words until they become entirely subjective. You see the same pattern in the now-common answer to “What is a woman?” – “A woman is someone who identifies as a woman.” As Western thought embraced subjective meaning-making in the early 1900s, it rebelled against all notions of objective truth. That rebellion has now given rise to these hollow, self-referential lines. A mature intellect should recognize them as empty, but alas, here we are.

Beneath this meaninglessness lies a deeper corruption: the reduction of love to lust. We now live in a culture where sex has been reframed as a “need” rather than a life-giving adventure shared with one’s wife or beloved. It conflates the natural longing for relief from anxiety with the momentary, death-like release of ejaculation – a fleeting calm before the anxious demons return.

To normalize this possession by lust, people have built elaborate, incoherent intellectual frameworks: “ethical porn,” “ethical non-monogamy,” and theories that sanctify lust by draping it in borrowed virtue. Some even mix in white guilt by idealizing “indigenous sexuality” while ignoring its shadows, all to prop up a lifestyle enslaved to lust. These constructs stand on the weak foundations of desire ungoverned by meaning. Take Lust away, and they collapse instantly.

Kindness Is Everything → Kindness Is Performative

If you doubt the hollowness of that slogan, wear a MAGA hat into one of those neighborhoods. You’ll see how quickly the stated value collapses. The mask of kindness gives way to rage, and what emerges instead is a screaming Banshee. At that point, it’s no longer the person speaking – it’s the demons that have been hiding in them, bursting through. These demons take root in those who have long listened to the internal voice that shames them into signaling virtue. That voice tells them what they must do to appear kind, and in obeying it, they lose touch with the real thing. It’s a satanic trap – a counterfeit of goodness that replaces depth with performance, substance with signaling.

Each of these distortions, in its own way, hollows the human spirit and turns virtue into its imitation.

I pray that every spirit of deception and hollowness named here – in false compassion, false power, false science, and false love – inhabiting anyone who reads this be rebuked, bound, and destroyed in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. And may truth, order, and living love be restored to glorify the Most High.
